The Barcelona World Race is one of the world’s highest profile sailing races. During the regatta, a series of double-handed (two-crew) sailing vessels sail non-stop around the world, competing to see who can arrive back in Barcelona in the shortest period of time.
Almost all modern regattas have an associated 'virtual' race - a browser based MMO game that allows players from all around the world to race each other in their 'virtual boats'. For the Barcelona World Race 2010/2011, I was fortunate enough to lead a fantastic team at the GTI of Universitat Pompeu Fabra to create the official Barcelona World Race Game. The game was ahead of its time in that in featured real-time 3D graphics in the browser, which now is increasingly common, but in 2011 was relatively unheard of.
The game was a great success, and is being repeated for the 2015 edition for the race, with estimations of half a million players. (While not being directly involved with the 2015 release, I am playing an active consulting role especially regarding the new WebGL 3D component).
I also oversaw the development of an iPhone App and mobile flash version of the game. If you want a good laugh, you can see me in full "promo mode" in the video below!
